May 6–12
Nurses Week Gifts for healthcare workers
Nurses Week, observed every year May 6 through May 12, sandwiched between National Nurses Day (May 6) and Florence Nightingale's birthday (May 12), is the one stretch on the healthcare calendar when the entire hospital remembers, all at once, that bedside nursing is the thing that holds a unit together. It is also the stretch when most of the gifts that arrive at the nurses' station are the same gift: a generic mug, a tote bag with a stethoscope on it, a tee with a slogan a nurse would never wear off-duty. The intent is right; the specificity is wrong. A NICU nurse and an ER charge nurse are not interchangeable, and a Nurses Week gift that names the unit they actually work in, the unit they introduce themselves by at every Thanksgiving dinner, lands an order of magnitude harder than one that does not.
Our Nurses Week picks lean toward sub-specialty over occupation. We index toward NICU, pediatric, and emergency department designs because those three are the units new grads request most often, the ones with the most identifiable iconography (tiny footprints, bear motifs, triage lines), and the ones where a unit-specific gift is most likely to be worn or carried at work. We also surface a smaller set of occupation-level picks (the plain 'Nurses' mug, tee, and tote) for the gift-giver who does not know the unit yet: the new neighbor, the cousin's fiancée, the friend-of-a-friend who just passed the NCLEX.
