Teacher Appreciation Week Gifts for teachers
Teacher Appreciation Week falls in the first full week of May, most years that is May 4 through May 8, and the PTA mail that arrives the Monday before is mostly the same thing on repeat: a gift card to a chain coffee shop, an apple-shaped trinket, a mug with the words 'World's Best Teacher' set in the same script font the room mom used last year and the year before. They simply have a cabinet full of them already. What they will display in their classroom, and what they will carry to the parking lot at the end of the day, is something that names the grade and the specialty they actually teach.
Our Teacher Appreciation picks are anchored by the three grade-band sub-specialties that come up most often: kindergarten, elementary (grades 1–5), and special education. Kindergarten teachers run the hardest year in K-12, and the iconography (circle time, line leaders, the thousand daily transitions) reads as 'I see what you actually do' rather than 'you are cute and patient.' Elementary teachers, the ones who turn five-year-olds into readers, get clean illustrated motifs that read 'serious educator' first and 'whimsical' a distant second. Special education teachers, who run the IEP machine and translate progress reports into language families can use, get a designs that nods to inclusion without leaning on the puzzle imagery the autism-acceptance community has been asking gift-givers to retire.
